Your first driving lesson with GSM: what to expect
What happens on a first lesson with GSM Driving School in West London — pickup, licence check, cockpit drill and your first drive.
Feeling nervous before your first lesson is completely normal. Here is what usually happens when you start with GSM Driving School.
Before the lesson
- Have your provisional driving licence ready — your instructor will check it.
- Wear comfortable, flat shoes.
- Tell us if you are nervous or have any medical conditions; we will adapt the lesson.
Pickup
Your instructor collects you from home anywhere in our areas: Notting Hill (W11), High Street Kensington (W8), Holland Park (W14), Shepherd's Bush (W12), Bayswater (W2) and North Kensington (W10). Learners in neighbouring areas such as South Kensington can arrange a meeting point.
The lesson
- Quiet road first. We drive to a calm residential street.
- Cockpit drill (DSSSM). Doors, seat, steering, seatbelt and mirrors — set up correctly every time.
- Controls. Pedals, steering, indicators and, in a manual car, the gears.
- Moving off and stopping. Using the POM routine: Prepare, Observe, Move.
- Recap. Your instructor explains what you did well and what comes next.
After the lesson
We give you a clear plan for the following lessons. Free driving tip videos are available on our YouTube channel, GSM Driving School.
